Courses and Enrollment

Q: How do I enroll in my courses?
A: You enrol in your courses on Quest. Quest is the University of Waterloo's student information system. The system supports student records, enrollment, financial, and administrative information. You can use QUEST to do the following:

Please see the "How Do I...?" on Quest for details.

Q: When do I enroll in my classes?
A: Please log onto Quest to view your appointment time. See Important dates.

Q: How do I add/drop a course? Is there a deadline?
A: Students may add courses before and during the first two weeks of lectures in the term in which the courses begin.

Students may drop courses before and during the first three weeks of lectures in the term in which the courses begin.

Yes, there are strict deadlines. The Drop Penalty 1 period commences at the beginning of week four and ends at the end of week eight. Penalty 1 is the automatic assignment of the grade, WD (Withdrew after the drop deadline, no credit granted). The Drop Penalty 2 period commences at the beginning of week nine and continues to the end of the term. Penalty 2 is the automatic assignment of the grade WF (Withdraw/Failure, no credit granted). This converts to 32% on your official transcript.

Please look on "important dates" for official dates for 100% and 50% tuition refund.

Please note that you can't drop your last class from your schedule. That is, if you only have one class on your schedule, and want to drop it, you'll have to complete a "Withdrawal form" and submit it to the Registrar's Office.

Q: Should I follow the sequence of courses in the Undergraduate Calendar?
A: Yes, you should follow the sequence of courses in the UW Calendar for your Plan. This will ensure that you have the prerequisites for future enrolments and that your courses will not be offered at the same time. Please consult with your advisor if you wish to make any changes to your sequencing.

Q: How do I know if the course I want is available?
A: Check the Schedule of classes.

Q: What's a good elective to take? Or How do I choose electives?
A: Well, there are a few things you should consider when choosing an elective.

Q: When do I choose an option or specialization?
A: Typically in your second year. If you know which option or specialization you want you can get a head start by taking some courses as electives in your first year but by choosing your second year you have left yourself ample time. Please complete a Plan Modification form indicating your intention to complete a Specialization or Option.

Q: What if I get a message on Quest stating "COURSE IS FULL, NOT ENROLED?"
A: If it is an elective you may choose another course to replace it or contact the professor (either at their office, e-mail, or go to the first class of the course you are trying to get into). If the professor has room in the course, they may sign an Override form. Please submit completed Override forms to the Registrar's office. Please check on Quest as to your enrolment and follow-up with your department if the course does not appear within one week.

Q: Where do I find information about Distance Education courses and enrollment?
A: All Distance Education courses are listed on the schedule of classes. If you wish to search for a DE course please visit UW Distance Education.

Q: How do I register for a course at Wilfrid Laurier University (WLU)?
A: Some of the WLU courses are listed in the schedule of classes. If the course is listed you may simply enrol via Quest. If the course is not listed you will need to fill out a cross-registration form. Note: if you are requesting a WLU Business course (that does not have self-enrolment on Quest), please follow the instructions on the Cross Registration Form and read the UW regulations and procedures for WLU Business courses.

Q: How do I take courses at other universities?
A: You need to fill out a Letter of Permission form. The process is explained on the form. You must have the course description of the course you wish to take when you fill out the form. Note that there is a processing fee involved with a Letter of Permission application.

A: On the 7th day of class. Please see the AHS Work Report Guidelines for details.

Q: Who do I see about stream switches?

Q: Can I take a course while I'm on my co-op workterm?
A: Yes, you may enrol in one course during your co-op term. Go onto Quest during your appointment time and enrol. If you wish to enrol in more than one course, you would need your department's consent.

Q: What happens if I don't get a co-op job?
A: Don't panic!! Check out co-op's continuous phase information for the procedure you need to follow. If that doesn't answer all of your questions, email your Co-op Advisor.

Q: How do I go about dropping out of co-op?
A: Complete a Plan Modification Form indicating your change from Co-op to Regular. Bring the form to Ian Williams for Department approval. Then bring the form to Co-op and they will approve of your change and have you complete an additional form. Please try to have this change to your record prior to the first day of lectures.

Policies and Procedures

Q: What happens if I fail a course?
A: If you fail one course you will receive a message on your transcript "Proceed on Probation." If you fail two courses you may be required to withdraw. If it was a required course you will have to take it again. If it was a prerequisite it may interfere with future courses. Please make an appointment to speak with an advisor.

Q: What averages do I need to maintain Honours?
A: Please check the Undergraduate Calendar for Dean's Honours requirements.

Q: What happens if my average slips below the minimum requirement?
A: We make academic decisions each term. Your average is accumulative, i.e. your terms marks are averaged with your second term and they are included in your average for the third term, etc. If you are below the minimum average (by 1% or so) you will be put on probation and have the next term to increase your average. If your average still does not exceed the minimum you will be required to withdraw from your current program.

Q: What do I do if I am sick and can't hand in an assignment or write an exam?
A: If you are ill or are having personal difficulties (i.e. death of a relative) and you are going to miss an exam or lab, you must contact the professor BEFORE the exam or assignment is due. In case of illness you will be required to produce medical documentation from Health and Safety. In case of personal difficulties, you may be required to produce documentation from Counseling Services. It is the student's responsibility to contact and discuss alternate arrangements with the professor.

Q: What are Residency Requirements?
A: Normally you will take 5 courses per term for 8 terms to complete a total of 40 courses before you graduate. By the end of the first 3 terms (Sept to Aug) of year one you must have successfully completed 5.0 credits and similarly 10 credits by the end of year 2 to fulfill our Residency Requirements. They are necessary to fulfill in order to graduate.
