It is the practice of the Department that student funding be guaranteed through some combination of teaching assistantship (TA), research assistantship (RA), and/or scholarships. While on scholarship, students normally fund their program primarily by this means.
Once a student's scholarship award is finished, the practice of the Department is to continue to guarantee financial support through Teaching Assistantships (TA's) and Research Assistantships (RA's). The number of terms funded in this manner is a function of scholarship duration.
The Department policy guarantees full-time Ph.D. students 12 terms of TA funding. Normally, this funding is annually applied as 2 terms of TA and one term of supervisorprovided RA in the first year and 1 term of TA in the second year Often, supervisorprovided support is also provided for two terms during the second year, depending on the availability of funding.
The Department policy guarantees full-time MSc. students 6 terms of TA funding. Normally, this funding is annually applied as 2 terms of TA and 1 term of supervisorprovided RA each year for a period of 2 years.
The term value of a TA is determined by a rate set by the University. The term value of an RA may vary some depending on the availability of funding but normally approximates the value of a TA.
Recipients of Tri Council and OGS scholarships also received the President’s Scholarship, valued at $10,000. Five thousand of this is provided by the University as a scholarship. The additional $5000 is provided by the Department, either as a scholarship or as a TA. A determination of whether the department portion of the President’s Scholarship will be awarded as a TA or scholarship is made on a yearly basis, based on the availability of funds and Department TA needs.
Responsibilities of Teaching Assistants
Teaching Assistants are responsible to the Department from the first week of classes through to one day past the end of the exam period. Students are expected to work an average of ten hours per week, though it is understood the actual distribution of work time in a given week may vary in accordance with course needs The term is equal to approximately 12 weeks with an additional 2 weeks for examination purposes and thus the total time commitment shall not exceed 140 hours. Duties may include teaching, marking, laboratory supervision, and examination proctoring. Unless you have approval from the Department Chair in conjunction with the Associate Chair-Graduate, you must be available for TA duties for this duration.
