Established as part of the 40th anniversary celebrations in the 2008-2009 academic year, the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies at the University of Waterloo created a new award to recognize outstanding alumni and honour their significant service, contributions and achievements to the profession and society that make a difference in other people's lives. The first set of awards were presented to 41 alumni at the 40th Anniversary Distinguished Alumni Awards Banquet on September 26, 2008. Every five years a call for nominations will be extended to add an additional 5 recipients to the list.
Commemorating the outstanding contributions of two Waterloo faculty members, Susan M. Shaw and Roger C. Mannell, this award recognizes outstanding indivdiual's career research achievements that have influenced leisure scholarship at the University of Waterloo. Sue retires in 2011 following an esteemed 20-year career at Waterloo. "Much of what we know of leisure and gender can be traced to Sue's work," explains Department Chair Mark Havitz. "She has pioneered research on time use and time stress; the intersection of work, leisure and family; and changing ideologies of motherhood and fatherhood." Roger continues for a couple more years until retirement from a career which has led the forefront in the social psychology of leisure and theories of play for children and adolescents.
