Quebec applicants require first-year CEGEP or equivalent; applicants with 2 years of CEGEP may be considered for transfer credit. Students from all other provinces and territories require Grade 12. In addition, all applicants require an equivalent to an Ontario Grade 12 U English course. For a list of course equivalents by province/territory please visit www.findoutmore.uwaterloo.ca/admissions/canadian.php.
International students
Students must present a high school diploma or equivalent; for a list of country/system requirements please visit www.findoutmore.uwaterloo.ca/admissions/international.php.
Applicants must also present an equivalent to an Ontario Grade 12 U English course. After applying, you'll be required to submit detailed course descriptions to ensure that your courses meet these requirements.
College of Applied Arts and Technology transfer students
Graduates of a two- or three-year diploma program must present a minimum cumulative average of B (75%) to be considered for admission. Students also require an equivalent to an Ontario Grade 12 U English course. Transfer credit varies depending on program applied to, secondary school background, level of completion at the C.A.A.T. and course/program equivalency assessment. Transfer credit will be considered only for courses relevant to studies within Applied Health Sciences (Recreation and Leisure Studies) in which a minimum grade of B- (70%) has been achieved. Normally the maximum number of transfer credits available for a two-year diploma is 5.0 units. The maximum number of transfer credits available for a three-year diploma is normally 7.5 units. Regardless of the number of courses that are presented for transfer, students admitted from another post-secondary institution will be required to complete a minimum of 50% of their course work while registered in the Recreation and Leisure Studies program at the University of Waterloo.
The Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies is proud to maintain transfer credit agreements with a number of recreation and leisure services programs at Ontario colleges. For a list of eligible programs and details, visit our Transfer Credit Agreements website.
University transfer students
Applicants must present an academic background at least equivalent to the admission requirements as specified for Ontario secondary school students. It is important that this background includes an equivalent to an Ontario Grade 12 U English course. Minimum requirements also include an overall university average of C (65%) and "good standing”.
Normally students transferring from other universities may be granted credit for relevant courses in which they have received a grade of 60.0% or better.
Regardless of the number of courses that are presented for transfer, students admitted from another post-secondary institution will be required to complete a minimum of 50% of their course work while registered in the Recreation and Leisure Studies program at the University of Waterloo.
Home-schooled students
Applications from home-schooled students will be considered individually by the appropriate Admission Committees.
Students must provide evidence that studies have been completed at an academic level equivalent to the minimum standard required for the Recreation and Leisure Studies program. This evidence may include a letter from the principal of a traditional and accredited high school confirming that the equivalent of an OSSD has been completed and indicating an estimated overall standing/average based on a typical final year of high school studies.
It is preferable that you complete your final year of studies at a traditional and accredited high school. You are strongly encouraged to present test scores in the related high school prerequisite subject (English). Test scores such as the SATs, ACTs, and provincial or state college entrance examinations will better enable the Admission Committees to assess your background.
Mature students
Applicants who have previously attended college or university are not considered as Mature Students for admission purposes. They should follow the admission requirements for college or university transfer students.
Applicants may be considered as Mature Students if they have been away from high school for some time, normally four years. Mature applicants are required to have at minimum an Ontario Grade 12 U English course or equivalent and must present clear evidence of ability to study at the university level.
All required courses must normally be completed within five years of the beginning of the term in which candidates begin their studies.
International Baccalaureate
Applicants must complete the IB Diploma with a minimum grade total of 28 (excluding Diploma points) including Higher Level English with a minimum final grade of 5.
The University of Waterloo recognizes IB courses as an excellent academic preparation for success at the university level and will consider awarding transfer credits for individual Higher Level IB courses in which normally a minimum final grade of 5 is attained. Please note that official final IB results must be sent from the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) directly to the Admissions Office at UW before transfer credit can be considered.
For further details on IB transfer credit eligibility or options to decline transfer credit, go to www.findoutmore.uwaterloo.ca/admissions/ib.php.

Applicants to the Recreation and Leisure Studies program require Grade 12 English with a minimum final grade of 75% for admission and will be considered for transfer credit up to a maximum of 2.0 units.
Specific transfer credit courses will not be awarded. That is, the following credit for AP courses in Biology will be given BIOL 1XX, Calculus will be MATH 1XX, Chemistry will be CHEM 1XX, Geography will be GEOG 1XX, and Physics will be PHYS 1XX.
