The Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies receives numerous requests annually from interested faculty and graduate students to come to Waterloo as a Visiting Scholar for time periods lasting a few weeks to a full year. We encourage a diverse cross-section of international visitors to the Department as they enhance the learning opportunities and research connections for Department members. However, the Department has limited resources to be able to grant these requests, mostly related to space availability. In addition the Department does not have funds at this time to support Visiting Scholars unless a teaching opportunity is involved. To fairly consider the requests, we have implemented an annual review and decision process.
Health Insurance
Please note that all visitors to the University of Waterloo are required to purchase health insurance coverage through the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) for themselves and all accompanying family members for the duration of their stay. More details about the health coverage requirements and rates are available at http://www.uhip.ca/intro.aspx.
Visa or Other Documentation
In addition, visitors are responsible for obtaining a Visa or any other documentation required for the duration of their stay in Canada or any other countries to be visited during the time period. Note that the expiry dates must cover the full duration of your stay.
Research Presentation
We ask all visitors to share with the Department a presentation on their research interests during their visit. Normally this is in the form of a one-hour seminar including questions and discussion that is available to faculty members and graduate students to attend. If you plan your visit for six months to one year, we may ask you to present two seminars - one soon after your arrival as an introduction to members of the Department, and one near the end of your visit to share with the Department your research findings during your visit.
Teaching Opportunities
It may also be possible to arrange for a teaching opportunity as part of your visit. If you are interested in teaching a course during your visit, then please specify whether or not your teaching experience matches any of the existing courses in our curriculum (undergraduate - http://www.ucalendar.uwaterloo.ca/1112/COURSE/course-REC.html or graduate - http://www.ucalendar.uwaterloo.ca/SA/GRAD/1112/GRDcourse-REC.html).
Interested faculty members should submit the following information to the Department Administrative Assistant, with a copy to the proposed host faculty member by December 31st for proposed visits during the following academic year (September to August). All applications received will be reviewed in January and decisions communicated to the applicants by late-January to mid-February.
In addition to the information above, graduate students who wish to visit for one term or more need to submit the following information:
Please note that while it may be possible to sit in on some graduate courses or other research seminars offered during the time of your visit, space availability is not guaranteed. Normally coursework requirements for your graduate program at your home institution need to be successfully completed before a visit would be approved.
