Practicum in Therapeutic Recreation

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

This course involves an unpaid practical experience for students in Honours Therapeutic Recreation. The supervisor must be approved by the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies Practicum committee prior to registering for the course. The practicum will require 105 hours interspersed over 1 academic term (15 weeks). The course will be offered on a credit/no credit basis.

Restricted to students in Recreation and Leisure Studies

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

The purpose of the practicum is to

  1. enable the students to learn about the therapeutic recreation profession in a front-line setting
  2. to learn to apply therapeutic recreation theory to practice
  3. to gain knowledge in setting goals and objectives
  4. to gain an understanding of the role of therapeutic recreation with specific client groups
  5. to learn about best practices and program protocols necessary for evidence-based practice in therapeutic recreation
  6. to gain experience with various client groups and various settings; and
  7. to be mentored by a therapeutic recreation professional.

 

Students will be required to set goals and objectives for their practicum in collaboration with their supervisor and course instructor. The course will be offered on a credit/no credit basis; however, the students will complete a weekly reflective journal and a 5-page paper of a specific program protocol. They will be required to research best practices for the program and guidelines for the population. In addition, a satisfactory evaluation of the student is required.

Note - the Practicum Agreement Form must be completed with an appropriate supervisor and submitted to Leeann Ferries before permission will be given to enrol in REC 253.
