This most recent book deals with research and practice in tourism planning and management of national parks. This edited volume contains papers on cutting edge subjects from experts that presented their work at the World Parks Congress held in South Africa in 2003. The topics vary from marketing, through community development, to tourism trends.

CABI hosted a book launch for this new publication at the Global Ecotourism Conference in Oslo, Norway on May 13, 2007.

This Encyclopedia is a massive work of papers that describes all aspects of leisure and outdoor recreation. Under the editorial work of John Jenkins and John Pigram nine contribution editors helped develop the topics, recruit the authors and edit all the submissions. Canada hosts a major conference dealing with all aspects of the science and management of parks and protected areas. In 2000 this SAMPAA conference was held in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. This book contains the conference proceedings of this 2000 conference. Gordon Nelson and Paul Eagles were professors at the University of Waterloo who helped organize the conference.

Park tourism is a major activity of most parks and protected areas. This book provides an advanced coverage of the principles involved in the planning and management of such park tourism. The year 2002 was the United Nations Year of Ecotourism. As one contribution to this year, Professor Eagles was asked by the World Conservation Union, the United Nations Environment Programme and the World Tourism Organization to prepare guidelines on the planning and management of park tourism.This was done with the very capable assistance of Dr. Stephen McCool of the University of Montana and Mr. Christopher Haynes of the national parks of Western Australia. The book was very well received in its initial language of English. Subsequently editions in many other languages were published. The Spanish version was launched at the World Parks Congress in Durban, South Africa in 2003. The book is aimed at the practicing professional in park management. However, it has also proven to be useful to many students in the field of park management.

This Encyclopedia is a massive work dealing with all aspects of ecotourism. Under the leadership of David Weaver, editor, the many contributing editors helped write, edit and review the many submissions of the world's experts in this field. This book is fundamental to any student or researcher in the field of ecotourism.

Eagles, Paul F. J., Margaret E. and Teresa Chang-Hung Tao. 2001. Guidelines for Tourism in Parks and Protected Areas of East Asia. World Conservation Union, World Commission on Protected Areas - East Asia Region, Gland, Switzerland. 99 pp. (Also published in Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, Japanese and Korean.)

The East Asian group of the World Commission on Protected Areas sponsored the development of guidelines on many aspects of park management. This publication was prepared by Paul Eagles and his two graduate students of the time, Margaret Bowman and Teresa Chang-Hung Tao. The book was well received in its initial English version and was subsequently translated into the major languages of East Asia.

Xu, Xuegong, Paul F. J. Eagles and Yin Zhang. 2000. Natural Protected Areas Management in Canada. Beijing University Press, Beijing, China. (Published in Chinese).

Professor Xuegong Xu of the University of Beijing spent a study period at the University of Waterloo. During that period she worked with her co-authors to summarize the state of protected area management in Canada. The subsequent book was published only in Chinese.

The World Commission on Protected Areas plays an important role of developing park policy. This book provides guidelines for the measurement and reporting of public use in parks and protected areas. It is designed to standardize this important aspect of park management around the world. These guidelines are the only ones of their type in existence. They have been extensively adopted internationally.

Allen, G. M., P. F. J. Eagles and S. D. Price (editors). 1990. Conserving Carolinian Canada. University of Waterloo Press, Waterloo, Ontario. 346 pp.

Carolinian Canada is a Canadian conservation success story. It was started by a consortium of major environmental groups and government agencies in the mid 1980s. This book is compendium of the major research funded by the World Wildlife Fund upon the launching of the program in 1985. Each research project was specifically chosen by the editors in order to fill information gaps in Carolinian Canada conservation knowledge.

Cadman, M. D., P. F. J. Eagles and F. M. Helleiner (editors). 1987. Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Ontario. University of Waterloo Press, Waterloo, Ontario.

The Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas contains the location and abundance of the breeding birds of Ontario. The compilation of data collected occurred across all of Ontario in the 1981 to 1985 period. This field data collection involved 1,351 people who undertook 123,879 hours of field work over the five-year field period. At the time of publication, this was the largest scientific field data collection in Canadian history. One reviewer of the book said it was "worth its weight in gold."

This book was a Canadian best seller. Professor Eagles was given awards by the Canadian Wildlife Service and by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources for his work in developing and managing the Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas project.

Nielson, D., R. Diebolt and P. F. J. Eagles. 1986. A Biological Inventory of the Six Nations Indian Reserve. Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies, University of Waterloo, Ontario. 267 pp.

This book describes the biological and conditions of one of Ontario's largest blocks of remaining Carolinian forest. Professor Eagles worked closely with the Six Nations Band Council in doing the field work and preparing the book.This book was one early contribution to the Carolinian Canada Conservation Program.

Eagles, P. F. J. and T. J. Beechey. 1985. Critical Unprotected Natural Areas in the Carolinian Life Zone of Canada. Carolinian Canada, World Wildlife Fund (Canada), Toronto. 400 pp.

Paul Eagles and Tom Beechey chaired a committee of scientists and field ecologists who had the job of identifying the most significant remaining natural areas that were not formally protected in a park or protected area in the Carolinian Life zone of Canada. The outcome of this task is contained in this book. The 36 identified sites became the core of the protection mandate of the Carolinian Conservation Program that emerged and is still operating.

Eagles, P. F. J. 1984. The Planning and Management of Environmentally Sensitive Areas. Longman, London and New York. 159 pp.

This text book, published in England, took the concept of Environmentally Sensitive Area planning from its emergence in Ontario and gave it global coverage. This book describes an important concept of the initial merging of ecology and land use planning within the concept of environmentally sensitive areas. This concept was later to develop into the field of conservation biology

The Canadian Institute of Planning stated that "this book should be on the desk of every planner in Canada."

Eagles, P. F. J. and M. Gewurz. 1982. The Natural Resources of the Fletcher Creek Swamp Forest Conservation Area. Department of Recreation, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario. 231 pp.

The book provided an inventory of an important natural area owned and managed by the Hamilton Conservation Authourity.The site had been purchased by the Hamilton Naturalists Club and donated to the Conservation Authority for management. Paul Eagles had been on the executive of the Hamilton Naturalists Club when the purchase decision was made.

One important aspect of the site was an old gravel pit that was slated for restoration. The purpose of the book was to provide background resource information for management planning purposes and to serve as a base line.

This 2000 edition compiles several years of field work in Brant County into one publication. Brant County is a located in the heartland of the Carolinian Region of Ontario and this book was designed to assist land planners conserve the Environmentally Sensitive Areas of the county. The book is still actively in use by land use planners and local governments. This book is just one of series of county-level ESA studies written by Paul Eagles in the 1970s. Others were done for the Region of Waterloo, the southern half of Wellington County, and the Hamilton Wentworth Region.

Eagles, P. F. J. and G. O. Adindu. 1978. A Manual of Environmentally Sensitive Area Planning and Management. School of Urban and Regional Planning and Department of Man-Environment Studies, University of Waterloo, Waterloo. 166 pp.

This 1978 book was the first field manual describing all aspects of the emerging phenomenon of Environmentally Sensitive Area planning. This book helped move forward this concept from its initiation in the Region of Waterloo across all of Ontario, later much of Canada.
