Introduction
I joined the faculty in the Department of Recreation and Leisure
Studies at the University of Waterloo in 1992. Prior to arriving in Canada,
I received Bachelor's (1980) and Master's (1983) degrees from the Department
of Park and Recreation Resources at Michigan State University, and a Ph.D.
in Recreation Resource Development (1987) from Texas A&M University.
I taught for a year at Iowa State University and for four years at the
University of Oregon.
Currently I am Chair of the Department. It is a distinct honour to serve what I consider to be the world's finest collection of leisure scholars, including faculty, graduate students and undergraduate students, in this capacity. |
Research Interests
My teaching and research interests focus on consumer behaviour, marketing,
finance, and management. My research applies this subject matter most
often to public sector and nonprofit sector delivery systems which provide
special challenges related to social and environmental issues, equity,
and unresponsive markets. Specifically, three major areas of concentration
have been related to enduring involvement, loyalty and commitment, and
unresponsive/disenfranchised target markets (especially unemployed and
low income groups). More recently my research has diversified to encompass a broader range of leisure meanings in which I have endeavored to explore leisure in my own life. My current SSHRC funded project is exploring physical activity participation, specifically running, over the course of people's adult lives.
